Wye Island Regatta

Thursday, September 12, Joe, Bob, Kris & Mike drove north to row a half marathon on the Chesapeake, across from Annapolis, The Wye Island Regatta. This was not only a half marathon test in preparation for our November marathon in Natchitoches, Louisiana, but an opportunity for great socializing, fun and food – not to mention sightseeing a beautiful part of the country.

We rowed a borrowed boat, the ‘Intensity’! Bob was obviously our selection for stroke. The question was who should be bowman/navigator. Somewhat amazingly, given past experiences, Mike was the choice. There was a lot of open water, so a major difficulty was what to aim (that is, steer) for. It turned out there was a bridge with very narrow piers, duck blinds, crab pots and crab fisherman, buoys, boats, etc. Ah, so much to hit, so little time…

Competition was stiff with crews from the DC and Philadelphia areas in force. We finished second, but we were pleased with our time. It was a bit breezy & choppy – not the easiest conditions to row at our best. And, now knowing the course, we could steer a better route.

Finally, one of the more amazing feats was Joe ‘Crabman’ Kelenfy tying into a dozen crabs!
